Irena Tonin
MD, SPECIALIST IN GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS
She graduated with honours from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Medicine, in 2007. During her studies, she was a researcher at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Ljubljana. She was awarded the Prešeren Prize for her research study with the title “Diagnostical Value of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in Children with Fever without Localising Signs”. She completed her specialist examination in gynaecology and obstetrics at the Ljubljana Gynaecology Clinic in 2016 with honours. The title of the specialist thesis was “Topical Use of the Long-Acting Local Anaesthetic Levobupivacaine to Reduce Postoperative Pain After Caesarean Section”. She presented the topic as a poster at the 23rd European Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Glasgow, Scotland. She has contributed to the development of guidelines for the treatment of pregnant women and women in labour with influenza virus infection. In September 2018, she was licensed by the Fetal Medicine Foundation in London to measure fetal nuchal translucency. In 2020, she was appointed Chief Mentor in the field of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. From 2016 to 2021, she worked at the Domžale Health Centre as a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics, where she was also the head of the gynaecology dispensary. She specialises in the treatment of gynaecological diseases and conditions ranging from little girls, female teenagers, women of childbearing age and peri- and post-menopausal women. Her passion is treating pregnant women.
She also performs 3D/4D ultrasound diagnosis of reproductive organs and fetal examinations. Until the end of 2022, she worked at the Dravlje Health Centre and the Iatros Medical Centre, where, in addition to the above, she focused on women with pelvic floor problems. In addition to endoanal ultrasound for the assessment of perinatal damage to the muscles of the perineum and anal sphincter, and endorectal ultrasound for the assessment of the presence of deep endometriosis in the rectovaginal septum, she is also involved in laser therapy in the area of the reproductive organs.
Irena Tonin is a member of the ISSM (International Society of Sexual Medicine) and ESAG (European Society of Aesthetic Gynecology).

Specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics since 2002. In the past,she hasworked at the University Medical Centre (UKC) Ljubljana, the Trbovlje General Hospital, the Domžale Health Centre and the Dravlje Health Centre.For the first 10 years of her specialist period, she worked mainly in gynaecological surgery and in the maternity ward. For the last 10 years, her main activity has been infertility treatment, including assisted reproductive technology. She has been screening pregnant women withnuchaltranslucency since 2004 and is licensed by theFetalMedicineFoudation(FMF)in London.She completed her Master’s degree in Reproductive Medicine in 2016. The title of her Master’s thesis is “Incidence of Failed Singleton Pregnancies in the First Trimester in Women who have Undergone Assisted Reproductive Technology and in Women who have Conceived Spontaneously”. She received training in the field ofIn Vitro Fertilisation fromProf. Dr. GeorgGriesingerin Germany.
She is a member of the expert group for the reform of the screening programme for pregnant women. She is a member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology ESHRE. She regularly attends educational courses in Slovenia and abroad. She feels that it is a privilege to be able to participate in the creation of life.
